Latest Posted Message: May 12, 2008  from Coach Bernard: Championship Hall

To Worthington Swim Club families and friends:

The most exciting project to take place at the Worthington Pools since the creation of the Natatorium is scheduled for this Summer.  It is the addition of the 3,200 square feet Championship Hall to the west side of the Nat. Construction will take place this Summer and early Fall.  Some of the many benefits for our team include:

-the ability to grow the program.

-use for dryland training.

-use for team activities such as championships dinner.

-use as a space for swimmers during swim meets.

-use of a dedicated bullpen area.

-free up deck space for parents and officials.

-use of classroom for meetings for coaches, officials, and timers,...

This project has been years in the making and to see it happen at this time is so exciting for our swimmers and for future generations of swimmers yet to come through our doors.  The funding for the new Championship Hall will be shared by all the programs that are using the facility: the swim club, the high school swim teams, the high school waterpolo teams, the waterpolo club, Wave, alumni,... A single day event on June 14th has been identified as the most effective way to focus all of our fundraising efforts.  The fundraising goal is $150,000 for the Championship Hall and an additional $50,000 for other improvements such as new score board and diving blocks.  Swiminc is spearheading the effort by contributing $50,000 in seed funding and a generous $10,000 in personal contributions.  All of the programs will work together to raise the remaining amount.  Some of the activities on June 14th will include a swim-a-thon, a silent auction, an outdoor surf and turf dinner,... We will need many volunteers to accomplish our goals between now and June 14th.  The first step is a meeting of volunteers scheduled for this Thursday night, May 15th, at 7:00PM in room 185 at Thomas Worthington High School.

Please refer to the prior Hotline from Paul Reeder for much more information about the Championship Hall, Fundraising Campaign and June 14th activities.  As I said above, this facility expansion is the most exciting event for our team in a long time and I hope to see all of us come together to help with the fundraising effort.  Please make yourself and your time available for this exciting project that we will be proud of for years and years.  See you on Thursday night and thank you in advance for your participation!

GO WORTHINGTON!---

Championship Hall Fund Raising Campaign
Communication Release

MARK YOUR CALENDERS FOR JUNE 14th

Swiminc is excited to announce the launch of our Championship Hall Fund Raising Campaign to
honor Coach Callahan’s 25 years of dedication and the excellence of Worthington’s aquatic
programs.

For a number of years the Worthington Pool has needed additional room for dry land training,
athlete education and expanded space during aquatic events.  For the past months the Swiminc
Board of Directors has been working with Tedrick Architects on the plans for the expansion.  We now
have a building plan submitted for architectural review by the city of Worthington and a budget for
the project.

To complete our aggressive plan to have our Championship Hall operational by November 15th, we
are focusing our immediate attention on a single day of fund raising scheduled for June 14th.  We
have asked the communication coordinators from each of our Worthington Pool partners to send this
message out to all patrons of our various programs with the hope that you will consider volunteering
your special talents for our June 14th celebration in honor of Coach Callahan and the Worthington
aquatic programs.

A project of this size and urgency will require the efforts of as many volunteers as we can gather to
work hard for the next 5 weeks in order to close the 6.14 celebration with our $150,000 goal
achieved and ready to break ground. To show our commitment to the project, Swiminc will the
pledge the first donation to the project of $50,000.  Additionally, the Board of Directors has
personally committed $10,000 to the project.

Here is how you can help.  We are having a planning session for our day of celebration this Thursday,
May 15th at 7:00 p.m. in room 185 at Thomas Worthington High School.  If you can help with the
organization of an activity for our day of fundraising (see the tentative list of activities at the bottom
of this message) we would like to have you come to the meeting and sign up to help.

The following is general information regarding our Championship Hall project.  Additional
information, donation forms, swim-a-thon pledge forms, building floor plans and the project
schedule can be found by visiting www.worthingtonpools.com/championshiphall or clicking the
Championship Hall link at www.worthingtonpools.com.

If you have questions, would like to volunteer or would like to pledge a donation, please contact
fund raising chairman, Paul Reeder, preeder@design-axis.com, 614-787-4979

Message: Apr 17, 2008  from Coach Bernard: Summer Practice Time Changes:

ATTENTION: GOLD, AGE GROUP, ADVANCED AGE GROUP I & II

SUMMER PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE:

Earlier this week we were informed by Sequoia's owner that the pool would not open for the Summer. This was a real surprise to us as we had negotiated a contract similar to our pool rental for the previous year and we had our entire training schedule set up accordingly. But as successful athletes do best, we will handle the unpredictable and make the best of the situation. After all, we are quite lucky to have a 40 meter pool available to us exclusively every morning for the entire Summer on top of our indoor natatorium. Considering other teams, such as Dublin or New Albany which were fully dependent on Sequoia for long course training, our team will be able to train in one of the best training facilities and offer one of the best training schedules of any team in Central Ohio. That said, we do need to make some significant changes to our training schedule to maximize our pool availability for all groups. All afternoon practices are being moved to the indoor natatorium. We will do all of our dryland training in the afternoon followed by a short (50 to 55 minutes) in-pool practice focusing on speed work. Distance workouts will be accomplished in the morning. Here are the changes for each group:

Bronze: No change.

Silver: No change.

Gold: No change for AM practice. Afternoon practice on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:50 to 7:15PM. Dryland training from 5:50 to 6:20PM.

Age Group: No change for AM practice. Afternoon practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:50 to 7:15PM. Dryland training from 5:50 to 6:20PM.

Advanced Age Group I: Morning practice time changed. New time is 7:00 to 8:30AM. Afternoon practice on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 to 6:20PM. Dryland training from 5:00 to 5:30PM.

Advanced Age Group II: Morning practice time changed. New time is 6:00 to 8:00AM. Afternoon practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:00 to 6:20PM. Dryland training from 5:00 to 5:30PM. Option: AAGII swimmers interested in swimming with AGI are allowed to do so for AM practice only.

I think this training schedule provides excellent training times for all groups and will allow us to accomplish all the training goals set for the Summer. Please feel free to contact me directly at coachbernard@worthingtonpools.com if you have any questions or comments.

We will always face adversity head on, and we will come up stronger in the end. GO WORTHINGTON!

SPRING/SUMMER 2008:

I am pleased to present our new practice schedule and fee structure.  You will notice a few changes such as more groups but smaller in size which will allow our coaches to better plan practices based on more homogenous training groups.  Another change is the addition of one full week to our Spring season compared to previous years while the Summer season remains the same.  One constant is the option to swim the Spring season only, Summer season only or get a discounted rate for swimming both seasons.  Another constant is the option for Gold, Age Group and Advanced Age Group to choose between part time of full time, both for the Spring and Summer season.  This offer great flexibility for swimmers who participate in other activities and still want to be able to train with the team.  Please do not hesitate to contact me directly by e-mail at coachbernard@worthingtonpools.com if you have any questions or comments.  We are looking forward to seeing you at registration.

Message: Mar 12, 2008  from Beth Parks:

The following fees will be due at registration:

Swim Fees - these fees must be paid in full at registration. There will not be an option to split the payments as in short course. As all fees must be paid in full, there will be no discount for paying in full up front. The 10% family discount for each additional swimmer of an equal or lower-fee group and the 15% additional non-resident (outside of Worthington school district) fee will apply. Swim fees may be paid by check payable to Swiminc or by credit card (Visa or MC).

Meet Entry Account - Once again, families must begin the long course season with a minimum of $100 in their account. Families with multiple swimmers may want to consider starting off with a larger amount. In addition, all outstanding balances must be paid in full as well. This fee is payable by check only, payable to Worthington Swim Boosters.

As a reminder, all outstanding fees need to be taken care of prior to registration.

Looking forward to seeing you at registration!

Message: Mar 11, 2008  from Bill Wachtel, Boosters' President:

Dear Parents,

The final list for parent volunteers has been emailed to you and posted at the pool.  If you have not fulfilled all of your required family participation sessions you will be required pay a $50.00 fine per session not completed.  This is all spelled out in the family commitment form you signed in September.

Also, this week you will find in your folders the final bill for your meet entry accounts.  If you have a negative balance in your account ( 59 of you do ) please take care of this ASAP.

Several families also did not meet their food donation requirement.  I will be contacting you by email to let you know what is required to take care of this requirement.

You will not be allowed to sign up for Long Course until these issues are cleared up.

This has been a great year and I want to thank all of you for your support and help with this season.  I am looking forward to seeing all of you during Long Course.   As a REMINDER, LC Registration for returning families is NEXT WEEK, March 18th and 20th...more info. regarding time TBA.

Message: Mar 3, 2008  from Coach Bernard:

WORTHINGTON SWIMMERS SHINE AT ALL CORNERS OF THE STATE!
Congratulations to all the Worthington swimmers who ended their season at the Barbara Kay Mini-Champs.  The meet was a lot of fun for  all participants, parents ad coaches.   I could not tell you how many times I heard Coach Angie and Coach Stephanie tell me how this swimmer could barely swim freestyle 4 months ago and now, "Look at  her swimming butterfly!"  It was exciting for all to end the season  on such a positive note.  Many swimmers have already told me that  they can't wait for next season.  Their enthusiasm is contagious.

Please note that the
last official practice for this season is March  14th.  Feel free to continue practicing for 2 more weeks and get a  head start on next season.

Worthington swimmers also excelled at the Senior Meet at the
University of Miami in Oxford.  Some of the highlight swims include  Claudia Doyle placing 5th in the 200 backstroke and at the same time  qualifying for a second event for the Ohio State Grand Prix of April  3-6.  Zach Rabold did the same by swimming a very fast 200 breaststroke in 2:14.40. Congratulations to both seniors!  Let's plan on having a large group of Worthington supporters at the Ohio State Grand Prix.  It will be the fastest meet to ever take place in Ohio with planned appearances by many Olympians including Michael Phelps  and Katie Hoof.  And now we have our own Worthington swimmers to cheer on.

Select Worthington swimmers also performed well at the Dayton Raiders  Invitational.  One swim that stands out is Morgan DeWitt's 500 freestyle.  Morgan broke our team record by more than 10 seconds in  her last chance as a 10 year old.  Her final time of 6:19.69 is simply outstanding.

Congratulations to all!!

THANKS VOLUNTEERS!
I could never thank enough all the volunteers and booster board members for everything that you do.  The five meets that we hosted this year were a complete success!  It was also great to see older swimmers show up at the pool this past weekend to help out.  It made a huge impression on our younger swimmers.  Once again, thank you all!

WORTHINGTON SWIM NIGHT
Wednesday, 3/5, will be the first Worthington Swim Night.  It is schedule
to run from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.  This fun event is meant to familiarize
new swimmers to our many programs
(Worthington Swim Club, Lessons,
WAVE, Water Polo,...).  We are
asking for all swimmers who attend
Worthington Schools to bring one friend to the pool and for Age Group
and Advanced Age Group swimmers to be available to help out
if
needed.  It is important for everyone to try to bring one friend as
they will be the future of our program.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE:
Wednesday 3/5: Silver practice is canceled.
Starting today, dryland for Age Group and Advanced Age Group swimmers
will last only 15 minutes instead of 30 minutes.  It will start at 7:15 PM instead of 7:00 PM.

SATURDAY 3/8 CLINIC
This is our last clinic for the season and it will concentrate on starts.  It is scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 PM.  The cost is $20
free if it is your first clinic.  Please pre-register with Coach Bernard.

REGISTRATION DATES
Please note that the dates for registration for Spring/Summer have been set for March 18th and 20th (returning swimmers) and for April 3rd (new swimmers).  More information will follow shortly.

Message: Feb 21, 2008  from Geri Hewitt re: BK Mini Meet:

Dear Worthington Swim Club Families: Its time for the last push for swim meet volunteers!! An annual favorite, the Barbara Kay Mini-Meet ( the 8 and under swim team championship swim meet) is Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2. For new swim team families, this is a wonderful event where the girls swim Sat and Sun morning and the boys swim Sat and Sun afternoon. All participants get both a trophy AND a chocolate bar--great fun! Please volunteer and encourage older swimming kids to volunteer as well. Please bear in mind that this is the final opportunity of the swim team season to earn your family volunteer points. All families are required to earn six points. The current point values are being updated and will be available soon. Contact our fearless leader Bill Wachtel with questions regarding your points. Bear in mind that you are allowed to earn more than six points per season. Please also note a new volunteer position available that gets you on the deck, at the blocks for last minutes hugs, kisses, and words of encouragement--the block helper--8 and unders are notorious for jumping off the block during the wrong heat, so these people will be there making sure the kids stay "stacked" like they are supposed to and not to swim in the wrong heat. We will need lots of enthusiastic help in the bullpen as well--the bullpen and block helpers are great positions for older swimmers and people with strong vocal cords and a tremendous amount of patience. Please email me at geri.hewitt@osumc.edu your requests for volunteer positions. Please mark you subject line swim volunteer, so I can find it if it gets caught in my OSU spam filter. I respond to EVERY email I receive, so if you don't get a confirmation from me, something is wrong and try again. I will be updating the sign-ups periodically so you will know what is available. Please check the updated list to see what is available before you email me--everything's first come, first serve. It is necessary to tell me Sat vs. Sun and am vs. pm. I may not know if your swimmer is a girl or a boy. Additionally it is VERY helpful is you give me options where to put you--i.e.. if all timer slots are full, I will do verifier or runner, do not put me in concessions, etc. Thanks again for your help ahead of time- No time to waste, the meet is 9 days away, just before the primary!

Sincerely, Geri Hewitt

JUNIOR OLYMPIC AND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

accomplishments as team accomplishments. Whether you qualified or not, it is by training with one another every day that you were all able to swim so fast.

Message: Feb 19, 2008  from Coach Bernard and Lori Reeder

Congratulations Regional Championship Swimmers!

We had an awesome weekend of racing. Most swimmers ended their season on a very positive note showing much progress on their stroke technique and many new personal bests. Our swimmers recorded about 35 new state cuts bringing the total to more than 100 swims, 30 swimmers and many, many relays. I will have a full entry eligibility report for the State Meet by Wednesday. Nice job Swimmers!

Thank you volunteers! You put together one of the best organized meet we have ever hosted! The feedback from coaches of other teams were just extremely positive.

from Lori Reeder re: Photos

State Qualifiers: Remember to be at the pool on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7:00 pm for the state qualifiers photo for the newspaper. Please wear your gray championship t-shirt. PLEASE be prompt, we do not want to disrupt practice by waiting for swimmers to show for the photo.

Coach Bernard will have a full entry eligibility report for the State Meet by Wednesday to check for State Qualifiers.

Thank you,   Lori Reeder

MARY LOU MINI MEET
Congratulations to al the swimmers who took part yesterday in the Mary Lou Mini Meet in Kentucky. For many swimmers, it was a first chance to hit the road and travel to an out of town swim meet. Coach
Angie and Coach Stephanie are very proud of the way the swimmers competed and handled the unfamiliar pool. Way to go Worthington!

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
It is time to get ready, excited and smart about the upcoming championship season. Parents, please remember to feed your athletes the healthiest foods (avoid saturated fats and sugars) and to get them to follow a regular sleep schedule. Swimmers, as we cut down on mileage and increase speed work in practice, you will surely notice some extra energy. Your job is to channel the extra energy toward your races, not horse play. I have seen many swimmers over the years (including myself) who dug up their old skate board, sled or basketball the week before championships only to end up on crutches, watching the races from the stands. You have worked too hard to let this happen to you. Be smart!

OFFICIAL END OF SEASON
For many swimmers, the Regional Championship will be the last chance
to race this season. Others will go on to race at the Barbara Kay
Mini Championship, Senior Meet and State Championship.
Our last
practice will take place on Friday March 14th. All swimmers are
invited to continue to practice as usual until that date. Age Group
and Advanced Age Group swimmers who are finished competing for this
season are invited to cut down their Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday
practices from 2 hours to 1.5 hours.

TYR WINTER INVITATIONAL

Congratulations to the 27 swimmers who took part in the TYR Invitational in Cincinnati over the past weekend. We recorded many personal best times and a few state cuts in the process. We also had the chance to compete against different swimmers than we usually face. Some of these swimmers came from South Carolina and from Oregon. We also had the chance to meet Skip Runkel who was our team's very first coach back in 1972. Skip now coaches in Oregon and enjoyed watching his "old" team in action.

Message: Oct 15, 2007 from Coach Bernard, Head Coach, and Bill Wachtel, Boosters' President:

From Coach Bernard:

I would like to take this opportunity to explain our team's policy of not offering make up sessions for canceled practices.

First, it is important to highlight that our age group swim team also interferes occasionally with other programs. The pool hosts many different programs and teams and we all have to cohabit with one another. When our age group swimmers move on to swim in High School, they, too, will have to sit out several practices per season to allow the age group team to host meets such as the John Bruce, Katy Callard, Kelly German and Regional Champs. Other programs, such as adult
practices and swim lessons, also face canceled practice time when we host meets.

Second, practice cancellations are fairly well spread out over the different practice days so that there is not one specific group that ends up missing more practice time than another group.

Third, I strongly believe that even with the occasional cancellations, our swimmers are getting all the pool time that they need to excel. Our team is always the first one to start practicing in Central Ohio. This year, we started a full 3 weeks before some other programs such as Upper Arlington.

It is also important to realize that our different training groups are close to full capacity and for that reason, we cannot allow swimmers to switch practice nights or training group when they have to miss their regular scheduled practice time.

I want to thank all of you for your understanding and continued support of our team.

Sincerely,---
Coach Bernard Vrancken
Worthington Swim Club

From Bill Wachtel:

The Yazvac family was in a head-on car crash this weekend in West Virginia . Tracy and the kids were all admitted.

Stephan and Caroline are in ICU. Tess and Trace are in a room together and are doing well. Mom and Dad are doing well but things are pretty crazy, as you can imagine.

When the time is appropriate, I will post a meal chart at the pool so we can help the family when they get home.

I will keep everybody informed as more information becomes available.

Message: Sept 12, 2007 from Coach Bernard, Head Coach Re: Stroke Clinics & Adult Program

Here is the cornucopia of information about the two new programs that we are starting this Fall. They are the Stroke Clinics and Adult Practices. I am very excited at the enthusiasm from swimmers and parents that I am already witnessing from the addition of these new programs.

STROKE CLINICS
14 Stroke Clinics are going to be offered on specific Saturdays during  the season. These stroke clinics are designed to offer a little extra attention to swimmers who feel they might be a little behind with a specific skill or stroke. The clinics are open to swimmers of all ages, from 6 years old to High School and even adult swimmers. These are not private lessons but we will keep the ratio of swimmers/coach much lower than for a regular practice. All Clinics start at 12:30pm
and last one hour. Space is limited and reservations can only be made in advance by handing an envelope to Coach Bernard with the full fee of $20 (cash or check to Swiminc.). Please write your name and requested clinic date on the envelope. There is no registration on the day of the clinic. Every swimmer on Worthington Swim Club receives one free
clinic per year but you still have to register in advance with Coach Bernard. Swimmers who have opted for the late start are strongly encourage to attend the early clinics in September and October in order to keep up as much as possible with the other swimmers on the team.

Here are the dates and stroke for each clinic:
September 22, Freestyle
September 29, Backstroke
October 6, Breaststroke
October 13, Butterfly
November 3, Freestyle and Backstroke Turns
November 17, Butterfly and Breaststroke Turns
November 24, Starts
December 8, Freestyle
December 15, Backstroke
December 22, Breaststroke
December 29, Butterfly
January 12, Starts
February 23, Turns
March 8, Starts

ADULT SWIM PRACTICE
Here is the chance for Mom and Dad to truly experience the benefits of swimming on our team. Starting Wednesday September 19, we will offer 4 adult practices every week (except if there is a conflict with a swim meet).

Practice times are:

Wednesday 8:30-9:30pm
Friday 6:45-8:00pm
Saturday 11:00am-12:15pm
Sunday 8:00-9:15pm

The fees are covered by purchasing a punch card that will be stored at  the pool (you will never forget or misplace your card). You can either purchase a 10 practices card for $50 or a 25 practices card for $100. Cards can be purchased with cash or check at each adult practice or by credit card by calling the pool office at 885-1619 during regular business hours. The adult practices are designed for adults with some swimming experience. They are not meant for novice swimmers. These practices will be coached but as an adult you are welcome to modify the practice and "do your own thing". Coaches will be there to challenge you to improve your skills and fitness level, in a fun environment. Triathletes, Masters swimmers and fitness swimmers are welcome. We will be starting a Masters team soon for swimmers interested in
competing. Participation in the Masters team is completely optional.
So come swim with us! It will be fun and healthy!

re: Practice Groups, Schedules, Fees, etc....

(..any issues, concerns, questions, please direct them to Coach Bernard at: coachbernard@worthingtonpools.com ...thanks!)

Dear Worthington Swim Club families,

I hope all of you, swimmers and parents, are enjoying your time away from stop watches and starting blocks. Soon enough, we will look toward a new swim season with much anticipation and excitement. In the mean time, enjoy the rest of your summer!

With registration for the Fall/Winter season starting later this week, I am sure many of you have been wondering what the new season will bring. Attached, you will find our practice group information sheet and group assignment sheet which hopefully will answer all of your questions. Some changes that you will notice include:

1. A shift in practice schedule (on October 29) for the Bronze, Silver and Gold group combined with some other slight adjustments to the practice schedule which gives us more pool time and yet allows the oldest swimmers to get out of the pool by 9:00pm at the latest, 15 minutes earlier than previous years.

2. A price increase that allows us to more accurately cover our costs, but small enough to keep us one of the best values in all of Ohio. Our fees over the past few years were heavily discounted as we were re-growing the team. We are now almost at full capacity and must responsibly raise our prices to more accurately cover our costs. We are also adding a fifth coach to our staff which will enhance our swimmers per coach ratio. However, you will be glad to know that our
fees are still 10 to 20% less than some of the teams that we want to emulate such as the Dayton Raiders and Cincinnati Marlins. We are also more affordable than most local teams such as UA, GCSTO and WAC.

3. More payment options such as an easy payment plan that spread the fees over 3 payments instead of 2.

4. We will start offering one hour stroke clinics on Saturday afternoons. Every swimmer on the team will receive his or her choice of one free clinic. More information about the clinics will soon follow.

All in all, I think we came up with some creative ways to keep making improvements to our team. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly by e-mail at coachbernard@worthingtonpools.com if you have any questions or comments. I look forward to seeing you all at the registration sessions.

Go Worthington!

Message: July 11, 2007 from Scott Rechel, Swim Inc. Re: New Head Coach!

After a month-long nationwide search for a new head coach of the Worthington Swim Club, Swiminc found its ideal candidate at home in our very own pool and is pleased to announce the hiring of Bernard Vrancken as Head Coach and Director of Aquatic Training for the Worthington Pools.

Bernard began swimming at an early age under the direction of his mother, herself an accomplished swim coach, in his home country of Belgium . At completion of high school, he pursued his dream of attending college and swimming in the United States, and after spending a year swimming as an exchange student in California, his talent landed him a scholarship offer from Bill Wadley, head swim coach at The Ohio State University. Bernard excelled as a four-year varsity letterman, achieving Honorable Mention All-American honors in 1991, and setting 3 school records, including the record in the 1000 yard freestyle on the very last swim of his collegiate career—a record that stood on the boards for well over 10 years.

Upon graduation, Bernard extended his passion for swimming as Director of Research and Development and Product Manager for Zura Sports, a leading manufacturer of swimming and aquatic accessories. He began his coaching career as an Assistant Age Group coach in 1995, and for the past 3 years has coached for the Worthington Swim Club and the Worthington High Schools . He is highly regarded for his strong stroke technique, his unique outstanding ability to develop swimmers of all abilities, his gift at maximizing the potential of his student-athletes, and his passion for the sport. “I am honored to have been provided the opportunity as Head Coach and am looking forward to committing my full time efforts at building upon the strong traditions of Worthington Swimming,” says Bernard. “I welcome the opportunity to take this program, and it’s talented swimmers, to the next level”. His former collegiate coach Wadley adds “Bernard is an outstanding individual, and you have my undying support of Bernard both as a coach and as a person.”

Bernard will be replacing Coach Scott Colby, who recently resigned to accept a position as Sport Performance Consultant for USA Swimming at its headquarters in Colorado Springs . The Worthington Swim Club will honor Coach Scott Colby at its summer banquet on Tuesday, July 17, 2007; at which time Scott will very proudly turn the reigns over to his successor Coach Bernard. Please join us on Tuesday at the pool to congratulate both Scott and Bernard on their new positions, and to recognize the many accomplishments of our swimmers.

Scott Rechel, Swim Inc.

Message: May 30, 2007 from Scott Rechel, Swim Inc.

Worthington Swim Families,

As I’m sure you are aware, Coach Scott Colby has tendered his resignation to Swiminc in order to pursue an outstanding career opportunity with USA Swimming at their headquarters in Colorado . For the record, we are extremely proud of Scott for having been selected for this position, and are confident that he will achieve great success at the national level. Our loss is certainly USA Swimming’s gain, and we sincerely wish him the very best in his new endeavors.

Scott has been a terrific coach, a great employee, a committed leader, and a fabulous friend to athletes, families, parents, and coaches, and he will certainly be missed by the greater Worthington Swim family. During his tenure, WOR has excelled in all aspects of our mission, and we are thankful for his contributions to the Worthington Swim Club. Make no mistake about it; we wanted to keep Coach Colby in Worthington . He has represented himself, our team, and our swimmers with class and honor, even to now fulfilling his commitment to coach the team through the end of the long-course season before beginning his new career. In the end, we understand his decision, and trust that he will take the pride of Worthington with him in his new role with USA Swimming.

Swiminc is fully committed to providing premier aquatic facilities and programs, and is already hard at work to replace Scott with a new head coach. We are finalizing the formation of our search committee, and intend to have the position posted in the very near future. We will pursue a very comprehensive search, and are pleased that Scott has even offered to assist us in naming his replacement. In the wake of Scott’s leadership, our swimmers and our swim team are in terrific shape, and we should expect to attract extremely qualified candidates.

We have an aggressive schedule, and will do our best to communicate our progress along the way. In the next few days, please look for further announcements regarding our selection committee and our process. In meantime, please join us in thanking Scott and congratulating him on his new position.

Best Regards,

Scott Rechel,

President, Swiminc, Inc. Board of Directors

Message: May 29, 2007 from Coach Scott

I am honored to have been offered and accepted the position of Sport Performance Consultant at USA Swimming headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In this role, I will be traveling around the country coaching other coaches with the goal of producing more national level athletes for this country! In addition I will be recording race data (stroke rates, distance per stroke, etc.) at all USA National Championships, and all USA Swimming Camps including international level camps, USA National Team Camps, Zone Select Camps, etc. Consequently, I have resigned my position as Head Coach of Worthington Swim Club effective at the end of this long course season.

Please know that I thoroughly enjoy coaching for the Worthington Swim Club, and my decision has everything to do with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and a great move for my professional career. The position is something I've wanted to eventually do and it has fallen in place much earlier than I had hoped. It was a very, very difficult decision, but I feel I must seize this opportunity.

The athletes, parents and coaches of WOR have been spectacular, and Swiminc has been a pleasure to work for . I appreciate being hired and been given the opportunity to coach the Worthington Swim Club, and I appreciate everyone's great support throughout my tenure. I actually offered, and Swiminc has accepted, my assistance in the screening process for the next Head Coach. I am committed to providing a smooth transition for our program, and most importantly, our athletes.

I have two main goals for the remainder of the summer:

Do the very best job coaching that I can in order to "Go out with a bang!"

Assist in any way I can for a smooth transition to the next Head Coach.

I am very proud of the long way we have come in three years. We have expanded from 45 swimmers in the Spring/Summer to 120. We have grown from 75 swimmers in the Winter to 170. We have climbed up from 25th to 13th at the State JO Championships. We are producing nationally ranked swimmers. But, most importantly, we have a closeness, camaraderie, and a positive attitude to continue to make make this a special place where we can have fun and still be as fast as we can! Very few teams in the state can say that!

I am confident Worthington Swim Club - YOU - EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU - (Athletes, Coaches, Parents, Boosters, and Swiminc) will carry our momentum forward into the future.

I love my time here. If it weren't for this job offer, I would stay here. I will always have a special place in my heart for ALL THE PEOPLE at Worthington Swim Club.

Coach Scott

Ad Campaign! Ad Campaign! Ad Campaign!

Reminder to all families - please work on gathering your ads for our swim program. Tha next 2 to 3 weeks will be critical in getting your Ads by the December 1st deadline. For those opting to not sell an ad but rather pay $40 to meet your ad obligation and be included in the multi-family team ad, please let me know (e-mail address is mhuber1@columbus.rr.com) for tracking purposes. We'd like the multi-family team ad to be as BIG and NICE as possible, so here is a new twist: if you sell $120 or more of ads, your name will be automatically included on the multi-family team ad!! If you sell at least $80 of ads, you can buy into the multi-family team ad for 1/2 price ($20)! I have had only a few ads trickle in, so please consider getting ad ad sold or let me know if you will simply take the $40 opt-in route.

Thank you,

Mark Huber

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out this weekend. The meet was a great success and I had many favorable comments from the visiting teams.

Remember to make a note of when you are scheduled to help with the meets or to deliver a concession or hospitality item. We had a few positions we had to fill at swim time because someone did not show up at their scheduled time as well as some food donations that did not come through.

Again thanks for all the help!

PLEASE READ THESE STORIES:

WOR TO HOST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS FEB 17,18,19! or Want to Save $500 and make $10,000 for Worthington Swim Club?

WOR TO HOST REGION CHAMPS FEB 17,18,19!

There are over 650 USA Swimming swimmers in Central Ohio. Each year in February at the biggest meet for the season for most of these swimmers, a couple teams get assigned to the Region Meet in Ayersville. No pool in Central Ohio is big enough to handle this many swimmers (except 1 that will charge the host club $10,000 per day!!! ) This will cost a family of one swimmer and one parent approx $490! The cost for our team's members would be near $50,000!

This Sunday, October 8, final permission was granted by Ohio Swimming with the blessings of Upper Arlington for Worthington to host a second Region Meet this year. Upper Arlington is hosting the original one.

The meet dates are a week earlier than the original schedule (February 17-19). It will also be held on Saturday, Sunday, Monday!! Monday, Feb 19 is Presidents' Day and there is no school. This has 3 benefits:

This will keep our swimmers from having to miss school for the meet

We will be better able to recruit workers on a holiday than a regular work day (Fri.)

We will be able to use the full parking lot for the meet!

HOW DO WE STAFF SUCH A MEET?

The Worthington Swim Boosters are giving first preference to families that need more dates to reach their family obligations. Second choice is for our members to volunteer out of the goodness of their heart and the ability to save $500 in travel expenses. Third, is call on another team to assist us.

If we do it alone, the Worthington Swim Club's profit could be as high as $10,000!!!! If we share with another team, we would see an additional $5,000 for the Boosters. "Stay Tuned" for more details!

WHO GOES TO WHICH MEET?

GCSTO NOVEMBER B MEET NOV 5

All 10 and unders in Bronze and Silver that do not have 'A' times. These swimmers WILL NOT be entered in the Golden Bear Invitational.

UPPER ARLINGTON GOLDEN BEAR INVITATIONAL

All 11 and older swimmers will be entered - regardless of practice group. These swimmers WILL NOT be entered in the GCSTO B Meet Nov 19.

GCSTO B MEET NOV 19

All 10 and unders in Bronze and Silver that do not have 'A' times. These swimmers WILL NOT be entered in the Golden Bear Invitational.

COSA KATY CALLARD MEET AT WORTHINGTON

ALL OUR SWIMMERS ARE SCHEDULED FOR THE COSA KATY CALLARD MEET AT WORTHINGTON. Swimmers 8 and under will see limited action, as the meet usually only has 50's for 8-unders and 100's for 10-unders!

MAKOS CHRISTMAS INVITATIONAL AT MIAMI

This is a highly competitive meet. Only select swimmers from AG and AAG will be entered.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGES:

NO PRACTICE FOR ANY GROUP ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10 DUE TO WATER POLO GAMES. It is TWHS vs WKHS and "Senior Night" recognizing those that will move on to college next fall. Sorry, we do not have the pool time for make-ups.

Saturday, October 14 - AAG 7:30-9:30am (NOTE: Earlier start time!!!)

MORE INFORMATION ON TEAM SUITS

The girls' suit remains the same. As Speedo promised they kept the suit for 2 years. HOWEVER, They had such good responses from that suit, that it will be around for 2-4 more years! We will continue with it during this time.

Due to the success of the girls' suit, Speedo has made a companion suit for the boys that will be around 2-4 more years. Our old design is no longer available, so we'll go with the new boys' suit.

MEET COACH STEPHANIE ASMAN

Assisting Coach Angie with Bronze and Silver is Coach Stephanie Asman. Coach Stephanie comes to Worthington Swim Club with 15 years of competitive swimming experience under various coaches including Coach Scott and Coach Bernard. She has coached for 6 years, most notably in the summers with the Olympic summer league team. One sister, Valerie, swims in the Silver Group and another sister is a champion diver being recruited by many colleges. Coach Stephanie attends Columbus State and will transfer to OSU majoring in Education. PLEASE WELCOME HER WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE!

REQUIRED NUMBER OF PRACTICES TO GET YOUR FREE TEAM SHIRT AND CAP

As I mentioned at the parent meeting on Sept. 10, this year team members will need to earn their free team shirt by attending a certain number of practices for each group. The intent is to make swimmers (and parents) aware of the importance of good attendance. The numbers required are easily attainable. SO PARENTS, PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CHILD AND MAKE THEN AWARE OF THE NUMBER OF PRACTICES THEY NEED TO ATTEND TO QUALIFY FOR THE TEAM SHIRT.

As soon as the minimum number of practices are reached and the shirts are available, we will hand them out to the swimmers.

Message: July 21, 2006 from Bill Wachtel, Swim Boosters' President:

As some of you are aware, the Swim Club Boosters board is in the process of applying for 501 c (3) tax exempt status from the IRS. Upon obtaining this status, the Swim Club Boosters will be able to accept tax-deductible contributions. In connection with the application process, the board has determined that we need to amend our articles of incorporation (which was adopted in 1967) to update them and bring them into compliance with the requirements for 501 c 3 status.

Although we do not believe that this will be controversial, we are required to convene a special meeting that all parents may attend to vote whether to approve the amendment. This meeting will be held on Monday, August 14 at 7:00pm at the natatorium. Your attendance is not required, but the meeting will provide you the opportunity to vote regarding the amendment.

You will be receiving in your folders at the natatorium a separate paper notice of the August 14 meeting that includes the text of the amendment to the articles of incorporation. If you have any questions, please contact me at tcipcolbw@aol.com or feel free to call me at 614-496-3802. Subject: Short Course Registration

Very soon you will be receiving news about Short Course Registration. I know it's hard to believe we are talking about Short Course Registration with Long Course not even finished yet but I want to let all of you know of a policy change that will come into effect for Short Course.

If you have not cleared your account from either Long Course this season or Short Course last season you will be not allowed to sign up for Short Course for the 2006-07 season until all issues have been resolved.

I am trying to alleviate the problems we had last year with uncollected funds. It was a major problem last season and I do not want the same thing to happen this year.

The Booster Board will be taking steps this year to better inform the parents and keep them more up to date as to where they stand financially with the Club. The board understands that we have an obligation to keep the parents informed, up to date and we have taken steps to make sure this happens.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me. My email address is on the club web site and I am willing to answer any questions you have.

Under no circumstance is the Worthington Swim Club E-Mail distribution list to be used for anything else but Swim Club business.

I have had several calls today about non Worthington Swim Club information being sent via the Worthington Swim Club distribution e-mail list.

I appreciate your cooperation in regards to this issue.

Did you know that the Worthington Swim Club is 36 years old this September? George Doyle Jr. did some research and found out that interesting fact.

Planning is just starting for the birthday bash to be held sometime towards the end of August. Pass the word around to our past swimmers. We will be looking for old pictures and memorabilia to use at the party.

Thanks,

Bill Wachtel
